Semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag)
German: Semesterbeitrag
Reviewed by Sajid ur Rehman— MSc Physics candidate, University of MünsterLast updated 20 July 2026
The Semesterbeitrag is a compulsory semester contribution at German public universities — typically €150–350 — which is not tuition. It often includes a semester transport ticket and funds student services. Most public universities charge little or no actual tuition on top.
Why it matters for applicants from Pakistan, India & Bangladesh
It's why 'free' German public universities still cost a few hundred euros a semester — but that usually includes your public transport, which is good value.
